Your AC isn't cooling — 5 causes you can check yourself

Your air conditioner turns on, the fan blows… but the air comes out warm. Three in the afternoon in Punta Pacífica. 33 degrees outside. Humidity clinging to everything. You walk up to the indoor unit — air is flowing, yes. Cold? Not at all.

It's one of the most frustrating situations for any AC owner in Panama. And one of the most common. According to service data in the region, 60% of emergency calls during hot season are exactly about this: the AC runs, but doesn't cool.

The good news: in most cases, the cause is simple. And you can often identify it yourself before calling a technician.

5 reasons your air conditioner isn't cooling

1️⃣ Dirty or clogged filters

This is the number one cause. In Panama, where units run 14-16 hours daily at 85% humidity, filters clog up much faster than in dry climates. A dirty filter blocks up to 40% of airflow, forcing the system to work twice as hard with zero results.

Fix: turn off the unit, open the front panel of your split, remove the plastic filters and wash them with cold water. Let them dry before reinstalling. Do this every 2-4 weeks.

2️⃣ Refrigerant leak

The refrigerant (R-410A or R-22) is what absorbs heat from the air. Without it, your unit is just pushing warm air around. In Panama's tropical climate, connections suffer more from constant thermal cycles.

Signs: cooling gets weaker day by day, ice forms on the copper pipes, or you hear a faint hissing sound. This requires a professional technician — never attempt to recharge refrigerant yourself.

3️⃣ Blocked or dirty outdoor unit

The condenser needs to breathe. If it's surrounded by boxes, plants, or has accumulated dust and leaves (very common in areas like Clayton and Albrook with heavy vegetation), it can't release heat. The result: your unit runs non-stop but doesn't cool.

Check that there's at least 50 cm of clear space around the outdoor unit. If the condenser fins are dirty, clean them with a gentle stream of water.

4️⃣ Electrical or capacitor problems

The capacitor is the part that starts the compressor. When it fails, the compressor won't start or starts weakly — and without a compressor, there's no cooling. In Panama, voltage spikes during thunderstorms damage capacitors frequently.

Sign: the unit turns on, the indoor fan works, but the outdoor unit won't start or shuts down quickly. You need a technician.

5️⃣ Wrong thermostat settings

Sounds obvious, but it happens more than you'd think. Make sure your remote is set to COOL mode (not FAN or AUTO), the set temperature is lower than the current room temperature, and the remote batteries are working.

❌ Common mistake: setting the thermostat to 16°C thinking it'll cool faster. That's not how it works — the compressor just runs non-stop and wastes more energy.

When to call a technician

If you've cleaned the filters, checked settings, and the outdoor unit is clear — but it's still not cooling — the problem is internal. Refrigerant leak, damaged compressor, or electrical failure. Don't wait: in Panama's climate, a strained unit can kill the compressor in just days, turning an $80 repair into a $600 replacement.

At 24Clima we diagnose the real problem — no guessing. Our technicians in Panama check gas pressure, compressor amperage, and electrical component condition to give you an exact answer.
